Why Choose a Yacht Charter Holiday in the Caribbean
The Caribbean is something that every sailor should experience at least once in a lifetime, so much history, variety and colour.

A place where constant trade winds carry you to lush, tropical islands and deserted beaches, seemingly forgotten by the outside world: a place where life moves at a more tranquil pace and where visitors from around the world lose themselves to the sun and perpetually warm waters.

Such a place is the Caribbean and its innumerable islands that form an arc stretching from the Virgin Islands all the way to Grenada. Within these waters are three of the world’s best holiday cruising areas, each with a distinct charm all its own.

The Cruising Waters/ Conditions
Caribbean weather is famous for being sunny and breezy, with a smattering of showers and rainy days thrown in. The winds are nearly always northeast to southeast at 10 to 25 knots. In the winter months the winds get stronger and more north-easterly. In the summer they are more gentle and south-easterly.

Given the rough North/ South orientation of the Leeward and Windward Islands, you are usually never having to sail upwind, only tight or broad reaching. We normally break the Caribbean into three areas, being the British Virgin Islands, Leeward and Windward Islands.

The BVI’s are contained and protected with multiple secure anchorages within easy reach. The Leewards begin in St. Marten and end in Guadeloupe to the south. Here you experience a variety of cultures including French, Dutch and British (such as Antigua) as well as West Indian.

Further South, the Windwards stretch almost to South America- at Grenada, a little more remote, arguably more lush but offering the same variety of cultures. November to April is the main sailing season, with August the peak month for the likelihood to experience hurricanes.

Getting There
From Australia’s East Coast to LA, then to Dallas or Miami, which are hubs that have many direct flights to the Caribbean. Direct flights are also possible from a number of cities including New York.

Local Cuisine
Caribbean cuisine is a fusion of African, Amerindian, European, East Indian, Arab and Chines cuisine. These traditions were brought from many different countries when they came to the Caribbean. In addition, the population has created styles that are unique to the region.

Ingredients which are common in most islands’ dishes are rice, plantains, beans, cassava, cilantro (coriander), bell peppers, chickpeas, tomatoes, sweet potatoes, coconut, and any of various meats that are locally available like beef, poultry, pork or fish.

Yachts Available/ Bases
The Caribbean has the widest possible choice of vessels from bareboats through to fully crewed- it is more a matter of finding the right vessel to suit your group and needs. Catamarans are highly recommended- firstly in the reaching conditions, as well as offering more room at anchor.

One ways are possible- the most popular, St Marten to Guadeloupe in the Leeward Islands and Guadeloupe to Grenada in the Windward Islands.
